Title: Ethics and Epidemics: Reflections on “Lessons Learned”

Abstract: From the Plague of Athens to the recent Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak epidemic disease have been associated with substantial morbidity and mortality as well as significant social disruption. The EVD outbreak stimulated numerous publications declaring the need to “learn lessons” from this “wake up call”. In this presentation I will critically review these lessons and argue that the most important lesson we have learned is that we collectively seem not to learn lessons. This represents a significant moral failure.
