Family-Centred Care in the Context of Medical Complexity and Disability: A Parent’s Perspective

When Jennifer’s son Owen was born with multiple severe disabilities, she and her family embarked on a 12-year intensive journey through various health care institutions and developmental services. In her talk, Jennifer reflects on these experiences in the context of family-centred care (FCC), drawing from personal anecdotes, clinician narratives and current literature. Jennifer considers the extent to which the overall project of FCC meets, or fails to meet, the needs of families dealing with complex, chronic medical conditions and disabilities.
