GLOBAL HEALTH DIVISION, DALLA LANA SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH

2013 -2014 MPH Global Health Student Roundtable & Professional Development Series (LINK)
The objective of the Roundtable Series is to: generate thought provoking discussion on major challenges in global health; and provide a forum for which students can become exposed to different career paths in global health. Researchers and health professionals from multidisciplinary fields will explore these two areas, using their experience working in global settings as a platform for generating critical questions, meaningful debate, and valuable insight. It is our intention that the series will not just be lecture-based but rather interactive discussions centred around realworld examples and experience, giving students the opportunity to think through concrete problems and challenges unique to global health related careers. We also want to inspire students to think about and act upon their current and future roles as leaders in public health.

The 2013-2014 series is in the process of being developed by MPH students Kashfia Alam and Ivneet Garcha in Health Promotion, with support from Judy Kopelow, Director, Strategic Initiatives, Global Health Division. This series is also being supported by a Student Leadership Team who will serve as moderators for the sessions. The Student Leadership Team includes: Mariajose Aguilera, Ilana Birnbaum, Alyssa Kelly and Vinusiya Peranandan in Health Promotion, as well as Mari Somerville in Community Nutrition and  Tahmina, Nasserie in Epidemiology

2013 – 2014 Communicating About Non-Communicable Diseases Series (LINK)

Beginning in 2012-2013, Metz the Global Health Division at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health hosted a new monthly lunch hour lecture series exploring the intersection between global health and non-communicable diseases. This series will be continuing for the 2013-2014 academic year. Those invited to speak will continue to include leading experts from across the University of Toronto, who will inform, engage and inspire on topics ranging from the governance and economics of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) to emergency settings and NCDs. NCDs, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes, are now the leading cause of death in the world. According to the World Health Organization, they impact both high income and low-to-middle income countries, killing up to 36 million people every year. Up to 80% of all of these deaths, many of which are preventable through basic interventions such as improved diet and regular exercise, occur in low-to-middle income countries. In some low-to-middle income countries, the result has been a costly double burden of disease (infectious and chronic disease burdens), further exasperating development efforts.
