Adel S. Sedra Distinguished Graduate Award
Sponsored by the University of Toronto Alumni Association (UTAA), one fellowship of up to $25,000 is awarded annually to a doctoral student who demonstrates outstanding academic excellence and extracurricular leadership. Applicants must be registered and in good standing in their second or third year of a doctoral program at the
University of Toronto at the time of nomination. The selection committee will choose a group of finalists to be interviewed. For more information, see UTAA and SGS website.

David Naylor University Fellowships
Endowed by a Gift from the Arthur L. Irving Foundation
The C. David Naylor University Fellowships are a prestigious entrance initiative designed to attract outstanding candidates from Atlantic Canadian provinces to graduate programs in the University of Toronto. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada, graduates of an Atlantic Canadian university and have been or will be offered admission to the first year of a full-time master’s or doctoral program at the University of Toronto. In addition, eligible candidates must demonstrate within their admission application academic excellence (minimum grade of “A” (e.g., 85%, 3.85/4.0, 8.0/9) in every undergraduate and graduate course completed to date); and outstanding leadership potential and commitment of community services in one or more endeavors (including, but not limited to arts, sports, music, entrepreneurship, or social enterprise). David Cornfield Melanoma Fund Award
With the purpose of supporting and advancing melanoma research, the University of Toronto and the David Cornfield Melanoma Fund have jointly established the David Cornfield Melanoma Fund Award at U of T, with the purpose of supporting and advancing melanoma research. Under the direction and supervision of an advisory committee within the Faculty of Medicine, overseen by the Chair of the Department of Medicine, one annual award of approximately $4,000 will be available to residents and fellows in the Department of Medicine, or a student in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, who has demonstrated special interest and research achievements in the field of melanoma.

Connaught International Scholarships for Doctoral Students
The Connaught International Scholarship for Doctoral Students is a cost-sharing initiative designed to assist graduate units in recruiting and supporting top international students by providing a top-up scholarship to each recipient, which will be paid in addition to the program’s normal funding package provided by the graduate unit. Nominees must be new international applicants who have or will be offered admission to full-time doctoral programs starting in the Fall term and must have achieved an A- (80%, 3.7/4.0, 7.0/9) average in each of the last two years of full-time study. Nominees must not have been previously registered at UofT. Please visit SGS website for further details.

Need-based Awards
Doctoral Completion Award (DCA)
The aim of the DCA is to support full-time PhD students who are beyond the funded cohort but within the time limit for the degree. Students must be registered to receive award payments and will not receive any payments once degree requirements are completed.

Iranian Student Memorial Scholarship
The University of Toronto has established the Iranian Student Memorial Scholarship Fund in honour of those who lost their lives in the downing of Ukrainian International Airlines Flight PS752, including eight members of the University of Toronto community.
Applicants, as of the application deadline must:
- Be admitted as a full-time student in a master’s or doctoral program at the University of Toronto and is:
- an international graduate student with Iranian citizenship; or
- an international or domestic graduate student pursuing Iranian studies; and
- Demonstrates financial need through the application process; priority will be given to applicants not receiving other major sources of graduate funding or financial support.

Scholars-at-Risk Award Program
The Scholars at Risk Award Program supports undergraduate and graduate students who:
- are, or have been within the last five years, asylum-seekers or refugees anywhere in the world (regardless of status in Canada), or
- whose current or proposed program of study has been impacted by changing political environments in their country of current or future study, including changes in immigration law, or
- are studying on a temporary basis (e.g. exchange) at the University of Toronto during a time of conflict or political turmoil in the country in which they are registered. These students would have special registration status.

The School of Graduate Studies offers approximately 20 awards annually through the University Wide Award (UWA) competition. Awards vary in terms of the specific eligibility criteria (merit, financial need, student citizenship, area of research etc.). Accordingly, applicants are encouraged to review the award-specific criteria outlined within each award description, to ensure they are eligible before submitting their application. UTAPS stands for the University of Toronto Advanced Planning for Students program. It is the University of Toronto’s largest need-based support program and covers the financial gap between a student’s actual education costs and the costs recognized by their provincial/territorial government student financial aid program. Paul Corey Scholarship for Applied Research in Biostatistics
Awarded on the basis of academic merit to one full-time thesis-stream MSc or PhD student in the Biostatistics program. Preference will be given to students beginning a thesis that focuses on both methodology and applications directly related to Occupational and Environmental Health.

Heather Milne Nielsen Graduate Scholarship
To be awarded to up to six full-time or part-time students entering the second year of study in the Master of Public Health (MPH) Program in Nutrition and Dietetics in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto. In keeping with the interests of Heather Milne Nielsen, preference will be given to students who meet the following criteria through a combination of study and experience: broad perspective of nutrition; long term strategic thinking skills; that they are innovative, questioning, motivated to share knowledge and receptive to new ways of thinking and ideas; that they value and respect the individual and the community and have the potential to build community capacity. Priority will be given to those students who are committed to pursuing interdisciplinary study to broaden understanding of the multifactorial causes of nutritional issues.

Dr. Linda Panaro Excellence in Public Health Practicum Award
Awarded to one Master’s student who is registered full-time within the Department of Public Health Sciences and demonstrates excellence in practicum placement, learning and research, and also embodies Dr. Linda Panaro’s passion for and leadership in public health. Preference will be given to those who also demonstrate academic merit.

Andrea Sass-Kortsak Award
To be awarded to an outstanding Research Master’s or PhD student enrolled in DLSPH, including IHPME. This is a merit-based award. Preference will be given to a graduate student engaged in research related to management, evaluation or policy related to occupational health or, secondly, to a PhD student in the Occupational and Environmental Health program.

Peter A. Singer Graduate Award in Bioethics (GSEF)
To be awarded to one or more Master’s or PhD students enrolled in the Collaborative Specialization in Bioethics to support a thesis project. Preference is given to students with projects using a solution-oriented approach and to students of merit. A ‘solution oriented approach’ isn’t simply descriptive or critical but is constructive along the lines of proposing something concrete in response to the issue/problem identified, e.g., a thesis that includes concrete policy recommendations, a protocol to change practice, a social enterprise, etc.

Merit + Need-based Awards (application required)
The Connie Boehm Award for Health Systems Impact
To be awarded annually in equal amounts to one full time undergraduate student and one full-time graduate student enrolled in any relevant program related to health policy and health systems at the University of Toronto and at Dalla Lana School of Public Health respectively. Selection will include outside-the-classroom experiences that demonstrates passion, interest and aptitude, as well as future endeavours. Selection will also be based upon academic excellence and financial need.
In order to be eligible for application and selection, candidates must also agree to participate with the Boehm Scholar-in-Residence for Health Systems Impact as a trainee during their annual period in-residence at the University of Toronto.

The Drs. Jeanne Ikeda Douglas and Foch A. Douglas Fellowship Graduate Student Endowment Fund (GSEF) is open to full-time Master’s students in Public Health Sciences, based on academic merit and financial need. There are no restrictions based on citizenship or status in Canada or year of study. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and achieve a minimum grade of A- (80%, 3.7/4.0 or 7.0/9).

Dr. John Hsieh Awards for Biostatistics Excellence and Innovation
To be awarded to up to 2 students, at the Master’s level in any year or doctoral level in year two or higher, who are enrolled in a Bio statistics degree program at DLSPH. The two available awards are:
A. To support students who have demonstrated specific focus in bio statistics methodological research.
B. To support students who have demonstrated financial need and are in good academic standing.
Both awards are open to all, but preference will be given to Black and/or Indigenous students.

Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF)
OSOTF is a category of awards that have been developed through a matching program with the Ontario government. The province, university and donor each contribute 1/3 of the award. The value of these awards are based on the annual income earned.
OSOTF awards are restricted to individuals who meet all of the following criteria at the time of application:
- Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada or protected person;
- Residents of Ontario at the time of application (as defined in University-Wide Awards, Eligibility to Apply); and
- Demonstrates financial need.
In addition, applicants must have achieved a minimum grade of A- (80%, 3.7/4.0 or 7.0/9). Master’s students Years 1 and 2 and PhD students Years 1-5 are eligible to apply. Awards may contribute towards the annual minimum funding commitment for PhD students.

The Anthony B. Miller Prize in Cancer Epidemiology
To be awarded on the basis of financial need, to a full-time graduate student in the doctoral program in the field of cancer epidemiology or screening. Academic merit will also be considered.
Danielle Haasz Graduate Scholarship
To be awarded on the basis of financial need to two incoming MPH Nutrition and Dietetics students with a compelling academic record and a notable record of professional service who are working towards licensure as Registered Dietitians in Canada.
Epidemiology and Biostatistics Award
This award is given, on a rotational basis, to full-time students studying in one of three programs: MSc/PhD Biostatistics, PhD Epidemiology and MPH Epidemiology. It is awarded to students on the basis of financial need and academic excellence. This award is available to these students in:
2021-22 – MPH Epidemiology
2022-23 – MSc/PhD Biostatistics
2023-24 – PhD Epidemiology
Grace (Weymark) Morgan Scholarship
To be awarded on the basis of financial need to up to two incoming MPH Nutrition and Dietetics students. Preference will be given to those who have completed undergraduate studies in an accredited nutrition and dietetic program at an institution in Canada’s maritime provinces (NB, NL, NS, PEI). Academic merit will also be considered.
Institute for Work and Health Graduate Fellowship
To be awarded on the basis of financial need to a full-time student who is studying within the broad area of work and health. Academic merit will also be considered.
Lifebeat ’96 Graduate Studentship Award in Women’s Health
To be awarded to a full or part-time Master’s student registered in the Family and Community Medicine program, on the basis of financial need and who is studying within the area of women’s health.
Mary Elizabeth McGanity Parkin Graduate Fellowship in Community Health
To be awarded to DLSPH Family and Community Medicine MPH and MScCH students that demonstrate financial need and strong interest in the Care of the Elderly field with academic merit in the program or their
pre-admission courses.
Occupational Hygiene Scholarships
To be awarded annually to a student enrolled in the Occupational and Environmental Health field of the MPH (Graduate Department of Public Health Sciences) program, studying in the area of Occupational Hygiene, on the basis of financial need. Academic merit will also be considered.
Ontario Trust Student Support (OTSS) – Dalla Lana Graduate Scholarships
OTSS awards are given to full-time students registered in Public Health Sciences on the basis of financial need and academic excellence. OTSS funds are generated from interest income earned from endowments donated by various donors.
OTSS awards are restricted to individuals who meet all of the following criteria at the time of application:
- Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada or protected person;
- Residents of Ontario at the time of application (as defined in University-Wide Awards, Eligibility to Apply); and
- Demonstrates financial need.

Ontario Trust Student Support (OTSS) – Mervis-Simon Family Award in Bioethics at the University of Toronto
To be awarded to a graduate student in good academic standing with demonstrated financial need. The endowment will support a clinical ethics thesis project award for graduate students enrolled in the Collaborative Specialization in Bioethics. Preference will be given to students with a career interest in bioethics.
“Clinical ethics” is broadly construed to include ethics research related to clinical settings, including organizational ethics, research ethics and public health ethics. Preference will be given to students with a career interest in Bioethics.
OTSS awards are restricted to individuals who meet all of the following criteria at the time of application:
- Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada or protected persons.
- Residents of Ontario at the time of application (as defined in University-Wide Awards, Eligibility to Apply); and
- Demonstrates financial need.

Roche Canada Scholarship in AI for Population Health
To be awarded to a Master’s- or PhD-level graduate student who is enrolled in a relevant program at the DLSPH, developing research and training in content generation and technical skills in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and emerging research in data science to improve population health and health system performance with implementation and applied impact. Preference will be given on the basis of academic merit, financial need, leadership potential and community involvement.

Sanofi Student Scholarship
To be awarded to a Master’s student who has successfully completed their first year of study in the MPH program in Epidemiology at DLSPH. This scholarship will be awarded to a student who has an interest in Implementation Science, Immunization Policy, and/or Public Health Policy. Selection will be based upon academic excellence and financial need.

Dr. Frances Silverman Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to a full-time Master’s or PhD student whose program of study is directly related to environmental health research, and who demonstrates a combination of scholarly merit and financial need. A student exemplifying the dedication and collaboration that Dr. Silverman was known for will be keenly sought. The recipients must be registered in the field of study in environmental health research within either the Dalla Lana School of Public Health or the Faculty of Medicine.

Professional Master’s Bursary (PMB)
The Professional Master’s Bursary is available to full-time professional Master’s students (MPH, MHSc or MScCH) with demonstrated financial need. Applicants must have applied to OSAP or provincial funding from their home province. If a student has made a conscious decision not to apply for provincial loans, he/she will generally not be considered eligible for this bursary. Part-time students may be considered on a case by case basis for unforeseen circumstances. The funding will be pro-rated for part-time students.

Hastings Memorial Fellowship
During the tenancy of the fellowship, the holder shall engage in original investigations in the field of Public Health under the direction of the Public Health Sciences faculty. The award may take into consideration financial need. The award will be available to PhD students enrolled full-time in the Graduate Department of Public Health Sciences.

Need-based Awards (no application required)
Professional Master’s Financial Aid (PMFA)
PMFA funds are available for professional Master’s students not eligible for the University of Toronto financial aid program – UTAPS. Like UTAPS, PMFA funding is variable and is based on further need of students who receive the maximum amount of government funding (OSAP/CSL). Students must be registered as Full-time, and must have applied to OSAP, or other provincial/territorial government student aid.

Residency Training Program Awards
C.P. Shah Award
Awarded annually to a resident enrolled in the Residency Program in Public Health and Preventive Medicine whose field or written report has been judged as the best and of sufficient quality by the appropriate committee of faculty members appointed by the Director of the program.
The award will not necessarily be awarded each year. Recipients will not be eligible in subsequent years. The first award was given in 1988.

Elsa M. Cabral Award for Future Leaders in Occupational & Environmental Health
To be awarded to a student in the MPH program in the Occupational and Environmental Health Division who demonstrates a combination of: financial need, commitment to improving outcomes in occupational and environmental health and; scholarly merit based on performance in two required OEH courses, CHL5904H Perspectives in Occupational and Environmental Health – Legal and Social Context and CHL5910H Occupational and Environmental Hygiene I. Successful candidates will be community-minded, have a dedicated passion for working with people and will exemplify great potential to become a collaborative and innovative change leader in public health.

Paul Corey Awards for Excellence in Biostatistics
The Fund will support four separate master’s and doctoral level awards that have been established in alignment with the values that Professor Paul Corey has consistently espoused over the course of his illustrious career; research excellence, academic achievement, committed student life and dedicated community engagement. Biostatistics Community Engagement Award – Awarded to one DLSPH Biostatistics student who fosters community engagement and contributes greatly to the betterment of student life. Selection will be made by the awards committee based on merits of the application.

Dignitas International Global Health Policy and Research Awards for Student Excellence and Impact
To be awarded in two equal amounts to two students, one at the Master level and one at the doctoral level, who demonstrate academic excellence and financial need, whose studies focus on global health issues in the developing world with an emphasis on health care system strengthening, who demonstrates passion for the subject matter and issues, and whose work will have meaningful and lasting impact for people and communities, in Canada and/or globally.

Cathy Fooks Award for Research and Leadership Excellence in Patient and Caregiver Engagement
Awarded to one non-professional Master’s or Doctoral level graduate student enrolled in any relevant program at the Institute of Health Policy, Management & Evaluation, and any relevant Public Health Science programs with preference given to the Social & Behavioural Health Sciences and Epidemiology fields of study at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. The ideal recipient has developed and contributed to the evidence-base for patient and caregiver engagement in the health system, including evaluation and measurement strategies. Successful candidates will demonstrate Cathy’s unparalleled passion for and immense contribution to patient and caregiver engagement, integrated care, mentorship and leadership, capacity-building and knowledge translation, and the importance of innovation and quality improvement for health system impact.

Health and Human Rights Prize
Awarded annually to a DLSPH graduate student for the best paper on health and human rights submitted to a course during the academic year. Theses and dissertations are ineligible for consideration. The aim of this prize is to encourage research on the relationship between health and human rights and is funded both by the Canada Research Chair program and DLSPH.

Robert Remis Award
To be awarded to a graduate student or recent graduate (up to 3 years since their graduation) in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health who had an excellent peer-reviewed research paper accepted for publication in the previous 12 months, for which they were a lead author.
Preference will be given to Master’s level papers in infectious disease epidemiology, and those that could be described as foresightful, original, unorthodox or willing to challenge conventional wisdom within society or academia.

Paul Corey Awards for Excellence in Biostatistics

- Biostatistics Research Day Poster Award – Awarded annually to three DLSPH Biostatistics students deemed to have produced the top three posters presented on the annual Biostatistics Research Day at DLSPH. Selection will be made by the poster awards committee.
- Biostatistics Academic Achievement Award – Awarded to one DLSPH Biostatistics student, with preference given to a first-year PhD student, with the highest GPA in required Biostatistics courses in that academic year; Sept-Aug.
- Biostatistics MSc Academic Achievement Award – Awarded to one DLSPH Biostatistics Master’s level student with the highest overall GPA in that academic year; Sept-Aug.

Mary Chipman Biostatistics Award
Awarded to the student with the highest average mark from Biostatistics I and Biostatistics II courses (CHL5201H and CHL5202H) in the same academic year. The recipient may be registered in any Graduate Unit.

Awarded to a second year student in the Master’s Program in Epidemiology on the basis of academic merit. The student’s research will be in the area of cancer epidemiology.

Martin McKneally Capstone Project Award
To be awarded to one graduate student annually who is enrolled in a Master of Health Science in Bioethics program at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, who has completed the capstone project program requirement. All completed capstone projects will automatically be considered for the award in any given year. The award will be conferred to the student whose capstone project best fulfils the award criteria: the integration of theory and practice; originality and academic excellence; and actual or potential impact on the field. Preference will be given to students who are enrolled in the Practical Bioethics course, or equivalent successor courses as they evolve over time.

To be awarded to a graduating student upon the completion of the MPH Nutrition and Dietetics program at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto, based on academic performance in the program. In keeping with the interests of Dr. McLaren, preference in selection shall be given to students interested in those aspects of human nutrition that relate to the community or to the understanding and control of problems such as obesity that are prevalent in the community.

Conference Awards
PHS Student Conference Award
The PHS Student Travel Award provides support to Master’s or PhD students in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, who are attending professional conferences where they are a presenting author on a paper or poster. The award is designed to cover expenses incurred in travel, accommodation, registration and material preparation.
