July 3/2014

Three Dalla Lana School of Public Health students received a Canada Graduate Scholarship- Master’s Award, a prestigious honour awarded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. This award is unique because it’s an investment in student potential and considers academic excellence, research potential and personal characteristics of each applicant.

The School would like to congratulate Russanthy Velummailum, Emma Holman and Makeda Zook.

Russanthy Velummailum is a MPH (Epidemiology) student interested in studying the relationship of chronic diseases — especially cardiovascular disease and diabetes — with ethnicity. She is interested in producing evidence-based research to create ethnic-specific tools that can be used for the primary prevention of these chronic diseases.

Emma Holman is a MPH (Health Promotion) student interested in physical activity and healthy nutrition for prevention and management of chronic illnesses. She is enrolled in the Aboriginal Health collaborative program and has focused many of her first year papers on this population. She is also interested in childhood and adolescent obesity.

Makeda Zook is a MPH (Health Promotion) student in the Community Development and the Aboriginal Health collaborative programs. Her research interests include health equity, Indigenous knowledge(s) in health promotion, environmental/social justice and youth engagement in sexual health promotion.
