Presented by the 2S/LGBTQ+ Health Hub & RISE Centre for Queer and Trans Health Research …

There is robust evidence indicating that 2SLGBTQI+ populations have poorer health outcomes, as well as poorer access to care and experiences in care. What can we do about this, though?

In this session, we will examine a model outlining systems-level issues in health care impacting 2SLGBTQI+ health, as well as briefly reviewing evidence on population size, experiences in care, and health inequities. We will then move into a conversation exploring the types of health systems and health policy research that could help to catalyze change.

Devon MacFarlane’s career has focused on leading strategic initiatives in healthcare, community organizations, and government contexts to advance health equity, with a substantial focus on 2SLGBTQI+ populations. Devon has served in a range of leadership roles advancing 2SLGBTQI+ health. These span serving as Health Canada’s lead for the whole-of-government 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan; having been a Director of Rainbow Health Ontario, and serving as the President of the Canadian Professional Association for Transgender Health from 2014-2016. While at Rainbow Health Ontario, Devonwas the opening expert witness for the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health’s study on 2SLGBTQI+ health in Canada, and acted as an expert witness in support of Bill C-16, which added gender identity and expression to the Canadian Human Rights Act.
