Presented by the 2S/LGBTQ+ Health Hub …

This lecture will talk about ethical frameworks that “professionals” (such as counsellors) can use to navigate dual/overlapping relationships. General frameworks of “professionalism” often talk about an avoidance of dual/overlapping relationship but there is very little guidance for those of us who work within our own communities and don’t have a choice but to have dual/overlapping relationships. What does it look like to move away from ideas of “professionalism” (which is often rooted in white supremacy, colonialism, ableism, and cis-hetero-patriarchy) towards an ethics of care that honours the unique roles and power we hold AND allows us to be in community? This offering will have a lecture component with promising practices that have been created through community conversations with anti-oppressive and anti-carceral clinicians, followed by an opportunity for discussion.

Facilitator: Ljudmila Petrovic (she/her) is a registered clinical counsellor (RCC) who focuses on individual and relationship counselling. She works primarily with 2SLGBTQIA+ folks and survivors of sexualized violence. Prior to becoming a counsellor, she spent over a decade in frontline work, including working in anti-violence, supportive housing, harm reduction, and youth work. She holds an MA in counselling psychology from SFU where her thesis research focused on identity building and intergenerational trauma in conflict-generated diasporas (specifically the former Yugoslavia). Outside of her formal labour, she also bakes, reads, and organizes within her community.
