Presented by the Buddhism, Psychology and Mental Health program (New College, A&S) …
The Buddhist traditions have long approached illness as a central form of human suffering, developing philosophical and practical responses to health and healing over millennia. In this talk, Dr. Pierce Salguero introduces the rich and diverse tradition of “Buddhist medicine,” exploring how Buddhist ideas and practices have been used across cultures to promote health while discussing how studying Buddhist medicine challenges common assumptions about religion and medicine and possibilities for future research.
This lecture is part of a series celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Buddhism, Psychology and Mental Health Program in 2026.
Buddhism, Psychology and Mental Health (BPMH) is the largest undergraduate Buddhist Studies program in North America, internationally known for its leadership in contemplative science education. For 20 years, BPMH has brought together scientists, scholars, health practitioners, and Buddhist traditions in dynamic interdisciplinary dialogue.
