Course Description

Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over and to improve their health and its determinants (Ottawa Charter, WHO 1986; Bangkok Charter, WHO 2005). This course introduces the foundations of health promotion theory, concepts, history, strategies and practice skills. Within the course, health is defined broadly and the promotion of health is examined at individual, interpersonal and community levels. The course reflects a critical, socio-ecological approach to health and health promotion, recognizing that health is influenced by a complex interplay of biological and social factors.

SYLLABUS

Course Objectives

  1. To understand the foundations of health promotion and health promotion practice;
  2. To foster development of ethical, reflexive health promotion practice and research;
  3. To develop a critical understanding of health promotion concepts, theories and strategies; and
  4. To develop skills in evidence informed health promotion program planning.

Methods of Assessment

MULTIMODAL REFLECTION ON ONE (1) OF THE FOLLOWING AREAS

  1. A description and reflection on a health promotion area, organization, or specific program.

OR

  1. A critique of Health promotion and the WHO and Ottawa Charter key documents and their currency today as related to a health promotion area, organization, or specific program.

SMALL SCALE SCOPING STUDY exploring behavioral theories in health promotion Paper – 30%

PROGRAM PLAN PAPER

Outline of an HP program plan for addressing a selected issue at the individual, interpersonal or community level.
