Recognized for her outstanding contributions to advancing public and population health in Canada, as well as her sustained efforts in public health practice, teaching, and research, Dr. Jane Philpott was presented with the C.P. Shah Alumni Award of Excellence in Public Health on September 18. Alumni and students of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health filled the 7th floor lounge to honour Dr. Philpott, bringing a warm and celebratory energy to mark the occasion.

Following introductory remarks from Dean Adalsteinn Brown and an award presentation by Dr. C.P. Shah, Dr. Philpott engaged in a fireside chat facilitated by Joanne Thanos, an MHSc graduate in epidemiology and community health and member of the DLSPH Dean’s Alumni Advisory Council.

In the fireside chat, Joanne Thanos, a Senior Director at the Ontario Medical Association, delved into Dr. Philpott’s career journey and her reflections on public health. Dr. Philpott, who is currently Chair of Ontario’s Primary Care Action Team, shared advice for students and those seeking to lead in public health, which included the importance of pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone, stretching yourself, and getting a Master’s degree. Joanne probed Dr. Philpott on her thoughts on how primary care and public health can complement each other in building healthier communities, referencing Dr. Philpott’s book, Health for All: A Doctor’s Prescription for a Healthier Canada. The fireside chat concluded with Dr. Philpot’s hope for the future of public health.

Stay tuned for more information about the 2025 recipient of this prestigious award, which was established to serve as an inspiration to DLSPH students and to current and future generations to continue to strive to make an impact in public health and health systems in Canada and beyond.

Dr. Philpott joins a distinguished list of recipients of the C.P. Shah Alumni Award of Excellence in Public Health. Congratulations to all!
