Health and Human Rights Prize
Awarded annually to a graduate student at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health for the best paper on health and human rights submitted to a course during the academic year. Theses and dissertations are ineligible for consideration. The aim of this prize is to encourage research on the relationship between health and human rights and is funded both by the Canada Research Chair program and by the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.
About the prize
A cash prize of $500 will be awarded to the winner of this prize. A Faculty Review Committee will select the winner annually. The winning paper will also be eligible for submission to the Harvard François-Xavier Bagnoud Health and Human Rights Consortium Student Essay Competition, where the winning essay is published in the Harvard Health and Human Rights Journal, a preeminent peer reviewed journal in the field of health and human rights.
Papers should conduct an analysis of any health issue in terms of human rights law, theory, philosophy or scholarship. Papers will not be eligible without an explicit and extensive human rights focus on a health issue. Papers that fall more generally into the category of health and human rights may be considered, albeit that a human rights analysis is still required. A range of topics fall within this scope including: the use of human rights to advance public and global health; rights-based litigation, advocacy and programming for health; the intersections between ethics and human rights; and the nexus between human rights and global health governance, global health policy, non-communicable disease, social determinants of health and health equity.

Papers should:
- Be approximately 5000 words, double-spaced, with page numbers;
- Consistently use any one referencing style throughout the paper;
- Include a title page and separate bibliography;
- Be submitted anonymously using student number only;
- Be submitted electronically to awards.dlsph@utoronto.ca
