Course Description

CHL3013H is an intermediate course that explores the theory and practice of clinical bioethics. It aims to deepen students’ insight into the role and attributes of the ethical practitioner; the normative ethical features of clinical care; the interplay of biomedical science, health technology, health law and policy, and professional standards in creating and shaping ethical issues in clinical settings; and the application of practical ethical reasoning in addressing ethical issues in clinical care.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Define the key characteristics of an ethical practitioner,
  • Recognize the role and influence of professional regulation, law, and institutional and societal context on ethical decision-making in clinical care,
  • Describe the normative ethical features of clinical care practice and delivery,
  • Apply principle- and case-based ethical reasoning to analyze and propose solutions to ethical problems in clinical contexts,
  • Work collaboratively and constructively with others to identify, assess and address ethical issues, questions, and problems in professional settings,
  • Communicate effectively about clinical bioethics issues to a professional audience.

Pre-requisites: Students must have completed the following required MHSc courses: CHL3001H, CHL3003H, CHL3005H, CHL3011H, and CHL3012H
