As healthcare systems strive to expand vaccine access amidst increasing demands and workforce shortages, innovative models of providing vaccine delivery are gaining attention. This event explores the implications of recent work on the growing role of lay student vaccinators in public health to support immunization efforts, expand access, and foster deeper community engagement. Join us for a discussion with Dr. Aaron Orkin and Dr. Sherilyn Houle as they share implementation insights and the future potential of student and lay vaccinators in strengthening public health delivery.
Presenters:
Aaron Orkin
Dr. Aaron Orkin is a family, emergency, and public health and preventive medicine physician and scientist. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto, and an Associate Clinical Professor and Head of the Department of Hospital and Institutional Care at Toronto Metropolitan University School of Medicine. Dr. Orkin is Ontario’s first fellowship-trained clinical public health specialists, and he has dedicated his career to developing and studying health services at the intersection of public health and clinical medicine. With a focus on developing programs to address health inequities, his work advances strategies to engage and involve lay workers and the general public in delivering care and building more resilient, sustainable, and distributed health services.
Sherilyn Houle
Dr. Sherilyn Houle is an Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo with interests in pharmacy practice to full scope, particularly in the areas of immunization and travel medicine. She regularly publishes research on pharmacy practice in immunization, has coordinated the injections training curriculum at the University of Waterloo since 2015, has authored multiple injections training programs for practicing pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, and has reviewed injections training programs nationwide for the Canadian Council for Continuing Education in Pharmacy.

Rosemary Killeen
Rosemary Killeen is Director, Lifelong Learning at the School of Pharmacy, University of Waterloo. In this role she oversees the design and development of professional development programs for pharmacists and other healthcare professionals and acts as Editorial & Operations Lead for the Pharmacy 5in5 project. A graduate of the University of Toronto Faculty of Pharmacy, Rosemary also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Public Health (Health Promotion) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She has practised in settings including primary care and community pharmacy and served as Editor-in-Chief and Deputy Publisher of the Canadian Pharmacists Journal. Rosemary’s areas of interest include educational research, health literacy, and the use of technology in education.
Annalise Mathers
Annalise Mathers is the Administrator for the Centre for Practice Excellence and is a Research Services and Knowledge Mobilization Specialist at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy.
