This panel discussion will explore the issue of COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness. It will raise awareness about the study and surveillance of vaccine effectiveness, and takes place during the World Health Organization’s World Immunization Week, Pan-American Health Organization’s Vaccination Week in the Americas, and Canada’s National Immunization Awareness Week.

According to GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, a partnership between the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the World Bank and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, vaccine effectiveness refers to how well a vaccine performs in the real world. Vaccine effectiveness is distinct from vaccine efficacy, which is the degree to which a vaccine prevents disease, and possible transmission, and is determined by comparing a vaccinated group with a placebo group under ideal and controlled circumstances.

How is vaccine effectiveness studied? What is the impact of real-life vaccine effectiveness studies? What vaccine effectiveness surveillance infrastructure exists in Canada? This panel will explore various approaches to researching and surveilling vaccine effectiveness.
