About this Seminar:
High-quality palliative and end of life care is a right for all Canadians. Palliative care reduces suffering and improves the quality of life and death for people with life-limiting illnesses. Recognizing the importance of palliative care, the Canadian Parliament adopted an Act providing a framework to provide equitable access for all Canadians to high-quality palliative care in 2017. Yet The landscape of death and dying is rapidly changing. Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) become legal in Canada in 2016, sparking intense debate about the relationship between palliative care and MAiD. The specific role of palliative care providers in discussing, assessing and providing MAiD for patients remains unclear.
Three years after the legalization of MAiD in Canada, its impact on palliative care practice remains unexplored. The purpose of this presentation is to qualitatively describe the perception of frontline palliative care providers on the impact of MAiD on palliative care practice in Ontario.
