Presented by DLSPH’s Biostatistics Division…
This session explores Language Models (LMs) through three essential perspectives. First, we build an intuitive understanding of how LMs are trained and why they behave the way they do. Next, we look at how to work with them effectively through prompt engineering — designing inputs that guide model behaviour in predictable and useful ways. Finally, we discuss how to evaluate LM performance in practice: what to look for, how to reason about outputs, and how to spot common failure modes. Together, these threads offer a practical foundation for using LMs thoughtfully and effectively in real-world settings.
