This presentation explores the experiences of LGBTQ+ students with mental health care services at the University of Toronto. Drawing from qualitative interviews with a diverse group of LGBTQ+ students, we speak to the various successes and shortcomings of on-campus mental health care services. We also explore the political, economic, and social contexts within which university mental health care services are situated more broadly, as a means of demonstrating how extra-local contexts impact social relations and the everyday experiences of LGBTQ+ students as they work to take care of their mental health. The purpose of this presentation is to offer a critical, qualitative, and nuanced perspective on university mental health care systems at the University of Toronto and beyond, with the intention of generating conversations surrounding mental health care systems, policies, and practices that can better meet the needs of diverse LGBTQ+ students.
