Join us for the 13th Annual Sue MacRae Lecture on Ethics and Patient-Centred Care.

Speaker:

Julie Drury, Strategic Lead, Patient Partnerships, Canadian Foundation For Healthcare Improvement

About the lecture:

In this talk, we will review what has occurred in the patient engagement movement to date, frameworks that have defined patient engagement, the mobilization of patient partners as healthcare system disruptors and influencers, and what may be next in the evolution of patient engagement. Key assumptions and questions will include:

* What has been the evolution in patient engagement to date?
* Where are we headed next as health organizations, healthcare systems, providers/clinicians, leaders and patient partners in this space?
* What is the potential for impact across the healthcare system?
* How do we ensure a sustained culture change and an authentic approach to patient engagement?

We will also examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on patient engagement, and review examples of the resulting effects on healthcare policy in a very challenging time.

I will reflect on my own personal lived experience as a ‘medical-mom’ during this talk, sharing anecdotes from both my personal lived experience and as well as those of other patient, families and caregivers to illustrate key points. I will also share my journey as a strategic policy advisor, and patient/family advisor, partner, and leader and how my expertise in strategic policy and my lived experience have combined to inform my current professional role as a leader and influencer in patient engagement and partnership.

Objectives:

At the end of this session, learners will be able to:

* Consider the evolution of patient engagement and partnership at the micro (direct care), meso (organizational), and macro (systemic/leadership/governance) levels of the healthcare system.

* Appreciate important/’best’ practices in patient engagement and partnership, including the importance of leadership in creating environments that are capable of authentic and effective engagement practices.
Consider the impact that a crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, can have on meaningful patient engagement and the importance of adapting patient engagement opportunities.

* Understand the importance of culture change for authentic and effective patient engagement and a sustained leadership approach.
