The Joint Faculty Development (JFD) program is a partnership between the Moi University School of Public Health (MUSPH) in Kenya and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health (DLSPH) at the University of Toronto. The program is designed to strengthen academic leadership, teaching capacity, and research excellence among early-and mid-career faculty working in public health education.

JFD creates collaborative, equitable relationships between institutions with shared commitments to health equity, academic mentorship, and the co-creation of learning environments responsive to climate and environmental change, global health, and community priorities.

Integrating Faculty Development and Co-Teaching

Faculty development is embedded into the JFD model through structured mentorship, co-teaching opportunities, and facilitated peer exchange. These experiences are grounded in shared values of reflexivity, anti-colonial pedagogical practice, equity, and responsiveness to context.

Faculty are encouraged to reflect on their own teaching philosophies while experimenting with innovative instructional strategies, including problem-based learning, role play, storytelling, and experiential activities.

The JFD Case Compendium Initiative

Supported by a SSHRC Connection Grant, JFD is leading the development of a joint educational Case Compendium that integrates climate and environmental change (CEC) themes into public health curricula. This initiative engages faculty and students across MUSPH and DLSPH in a year-long collaborative process of idea generation, co-teaching, writing, and reflection.

The Case Compendium initiative began in February 2025 and will culminate in a virtual launch in February 2026. This resource will include case studies that draw from local contexts, lived experience, interdisciplinary thinking, and pedagogical approaches grounded in equity and active learning.

Key Milestones and Timeline

  • February 2025 – Program launch and foundational learning assignment on planetary health
  • March 2025 – Submission of introductory assignments and initial topic exploration
  • April 2025 – Idea Incubator Event and faculty–student team formation
  • May–November 2025 – Case refinement and collaborative development
  • October 2025 – Two-day hybrid workshop hosted across institutions
  • February 2026 – Public launch of the digital case compendium

Each case study team includes one faculty member from MUSPH, one from DLSPH, and two MPH students. Teams work asynchronously across time zones to develop case-based learning materials relevant to both institutional curricula.

Call for Expressions of Interest (EOI)

In January 2025, JFD issued a Call for Expressions of Interest to early- and mid-career faculty members interested in co-developing educational case studies. Ten faculty (five from each institution) were selected to lead case development in partnership with graduate students and with support from the JFD team.

Selected faculty are participating in a series of collaborative activities including:

  • Foundational training on planetary health
  • Interdisciplinary team building
  • Mentored co-teaching
  • Cross-institutional pedagogical exchange
  • Co-authorship of climate- and health-focused cases

Who’s Involved

The JFD initiative is co-led by Dr. Shaza Fadel (DLSPH) and Dr. Peter Koskei (MUSPH), with support from academic leaders, program staff, and research assistants across both institutions.

Contributors include faculty from DLSPH and MUSPH, along with graduate students in global and public health programs. Select case studies may also involve broader engagement with policymakers, educators, and community practitioners.
