Canada-China Collaborative Program of HIV/STI Research

November 1/2012

Title: Launch of new video about the Canada-China Collaborative Program of HIV/STI Research

Description: The Canada-China Collaborative Program of HIV/STI Research entitled, Prevention, Care and Support for Vulnerable Populations at Risk for STI and HIV in Shanghai, China (2007-2012) is the focus of a new video by Red Gate Pictures. The video provides a glimpse into this Program of HIV/STI Research, which sought to respond to a mounting public health crisis in China through a 5-year research and training program designed to enhance local system capacity and offer more diversified and effective intervention models to address the needs of people most at risk for HIV and sexually transmitted infections.

This multi-disciplinary, multi-stakeholder program of action research represents a long-standing international partnership between the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto and the Chinese governmental health agency, the Shanghai Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. The Program of HIV/STI Research was developed to conduct socio-behavioural and epidemiological research into the drivers of Shanghai’s HIV/STI epidemic and design, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions targeting most at-risk populations, including 1) migrant construction workers, 2) female entertainment workers, 3) gay men and other men who have sex with men, 4) people living with HIV and their health care providers; and to address structural drivers at the policy level through work with decision makers.
