The PHS Student Conference Award provides support to Master’s or Doctoral students in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, who are attending academic conferences where they are a presenting author on a paper or poster. The award is designed to help cover a portion of expenses incurred in conference registration, material preparation and travel (depending on availability of funds and location of travel). Students are expected to have received approval to travel from the University Safety Abroad Office before pursuing any travel for in-person conferences. The PHS Conference Award is valued up to $500 each. Final award amounts are dependent upon the number of applications that we receive.

Deadline to apply is June 1, 2024 for conferences occurring between  September 1, 2023 – August 31, 2024. Late applications will not be accepted.

Eligibility to Apply:
Applicants must:

  • Be registered full-time at both the time of application and the conference presentation. Conference presentations scheduled to occur after convocation are not eligible for grant support:
  • Be actively presenting at a conference that occurs between September 1, 2023 – August 31, 2024.
  • Not be awarded another conference grant for the same conference.

Doctoral students are eligible for up to two PHS Conference awards and Master’s students are eligible for a single award, per degree program.

Application Process:
A complete application package will include:

  • Cover letter (complete with applicant contact information). The applicant should sufficiently indicate in the cover letter how participation at the proposed conference will contribute to public health research and practice and further the applicant’s academic goals.
  • Supporting documentation, including:
    • A copy of the submitted abstract;
    • Conference details, including date and time. Abstract/poster submissions must be peer reviewed before acceptance is granted; Conference must be sponsored by a scholarly association/society, university or institution.
    • Official written confirmation of abstract acceptance (including the type of presentation that has been accepted e.g. poster or oral).
  • Proposed budget and expenses. Include a summary of costs incurred such as registration fees. The applicant must demonstrate attempts to secure additional funding to supplement their travel and other related expenses (e.g., via supervisors, employers, and other student travel awards). The type and amount of such funding sought or received from other sources should be clearly indicated in the application.
