Applications are now open for the 2023-24 Public Health Sciences (PHS) Merit + Needs-Based Awards.

Brief award descriptions and details about the application process can be found below.

Award Descriptions:

Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF) Awards:

The following awards are included in this category:

A.B. Miller Prize in Cancer Epidemiology – Award Value: up to $4,200
To be awarded, on the basis of financial need, to a full-time graduate student in the Doctoral program in the field of cancer epidemiology or screening.  Academic merit will also be considered.

Epidemiology and Biostatistics Award – Award Value: up to $6,700
This OSOTF award is given, on a rotational basis, to full-time students studying in one of three programs in the Graduate Department of Public Health Sciences:  (1) MSc/PhD Biostatistics; 2) PhD Epidemiology and 3) MPH Epidemiology).  It is awarded to students on the basis of financial need and academic excellence. For 2023-24 academic year, PhD Epidemiology students are eligible to apply.

Institute for Work and Health Graduate Fellowship – Award Value: up to $3,000
To be awarded, on the basis of financial need, to a full-time graduate student who is studying within the broad area of work and health.  Academic merit will also be considered.

Occupational Hygiene Scholarship Fund – Award Value: $700
To be awarded annually to a student enrolled in the Occupational and Environmental Health field of the MPH (Graduate Department of Public Health Sciences) program, studying in the area of Occupational Hygiene, on the basis of financial need. Academic merit will also be considered.

Mary Elizabeth McGanity Parkin Graduate Award – Award Value: up to $6,500
Awarded to a full-time or part-time students registered in Family and Community Medicine MPH and MScCH programs that demonstrate strong interest in the Care of the Elderly field . Financial need with academic merit in the program or their pre-admission courses will also be considered.

Lifebeat ’96 Studentship in Women’s Health – Award Value: $800
Awarded to a full-time or part-time student registered in the Masters program in Family and Community Medicine within the area of women’s health. Financial need will also be considered.

Danielle Haasz Graduate Scholarship – Award Value: up to $3,500
To be awarded on the basis of financial need to full-time students with excellent academic record in the Master of Public Health Program (MPH) in Nutrition & Dietetics at the University of Toronto, with emphasis on Dietetics, and leading to professional registration in the association of the Dietitians of Canada. Academic merit will also be considered.

Grace (Weymark) Morgan Scholarship – Award Value: approx. $3,800
To be awarded to full-time graduate students enrolled in the MPH Nutrition & Dietetics program, on the basis of financial need. Preference will be given to undergraduate students from Memorial University.

Ontario Trust Student Support (OTSS) – Dalla Lana Graduate Scholarships

Award Value: up to $3,000
The Dalla Lana Scholarship (OTSS) is awarded to full-time graduate students on the basis of financial need and academic merit. Demonstration of financial need will be required with the completion of a Financial Needs Assessment Form.

Drs. Jeanne Ikeda Douglas & Foch A. Douglas Fellowship Graduate Student Endowment Fund (GSEF)

Award Value: up to $2,000
The Drs. Jeanne Ikea Douglas and Foch A. Douglas Fellowship Graduate Student Endowment Fund is awarded to full-time graduate students on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Demonstration of financial need will be required with the completion of a Financial Needs Assessment Form.  There are no restrictions based on citizenship or status in Canada or year of study.

Dr. Frances Silverman Memorial Scholarship

Award Value: $2,000
Awarded to a full-time master’s or PhD student whose program of study is directly related to environmental health research, and who demonstrates a combination of scholarly merit and financial need. A student exemplifying the dedication and collaboration that Dr. Silverman was known for will be keenly sought. The recipients must be registered in the field of study in environmental health research within the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.

Vohra-Miller Doctoral Fellowship on Health Equity

Award Value: approx. $4,000
To be awarded to one full-time research or professional stream doctoral student entering their second year of any doctoral program at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health on the basis of relevance of proposed area of study in health equity. Selection will also be based upon academic excellence and financial need.

Vohra-Miller Scholarships in Maternal & Child Health

Award Value: approx. $3,600

To be awarded to one full-time doctoral level student registered in a research-stream doctorate or professional doctorate at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto who is researching maternal, reproductive and child health in areas including but not limited to the social determinants of health, toxins, environmental factors and medications. Selection will also be based upon academic excellence and financial need.

The Roche Canada Scholarship in AI for Population Health

Award Value: approx. $10,000

To be awarded to a Master’s- or PhD-level graduate student who is enrolled in a relevant program at the DLSPH, developing research and training in content generation and technical skills in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and emerging research in data science to improve population health and health system performance with implementation and applied impact. Preference will be given on the basis of academic merit, financial need, leadership potential and community involvement. Eligible students may self-nominate. Supervisors may also nominate students. One-page nomination letter should detail contributions/achievements, leadership potential and community involvement in the area(s) outlined in the award overview.

General Eligibility criteria for PHS Merit + Needs-Based Awards:

To be eligible to apply, applicant must:

  • Be a full-time graduate student registered in 2023-24 (Master’s – Years 1 and 2; PhD – Years 1 to 5). Some OSOTFs are open to part-time students (refer to award descriptions).
  • Have achieved an overall average of a minimum of A- in the most recent year of full-time study
  • Demonstrate financial need.

Application Process:

To complete the Public Health Sciences Merit and Merit + Need Based Awards form you need to

  • Select the appropriate award category and individual awards.
  • Upload the appropriate documents as one PDF.
  • Include contact information for your reference. Exception: reference letters are not required for the Danielle Haasz and Grace Weymark OSOTF Awards.

Documents

  • Financial Needs Assessment Form. You demonstrate financial need when a negative balance appears in the “TOTAL NEED” field on page 2 of the form. Showing a positive balance in the “TOTAL NEED” field is not typically considered a demonstration of financial need, unless extenuating circumstances are also reported (an additional page with an explanation may be submitted).
  • Transcripts – Graduate/undergraduate unofficial transcripts printed from the University student web systems are acceptable.
  • Curriculum Vitae (maximum of 2 pages)
  • 1 page letter summarizing the relevance of your research and achievements as they relate to the award

Please note that applicants applying for multiple awards may submit only one complete application package with all of the required documentation.

Terms and Conditions for PHS Merit + Needs-Based Awards:

  • The award holder must be a full-time student for at least 14 weeks in any term during which they hold the award. Exceptions apply to certain awards (refer to award descriptions).
  • Repayment of an award is required if a student withdraws from the program.
  • The funding period is for the 2023-24 academic year (September 1, 2023 to August 31, 2024). Award payments are first applied to the student’s outstanding tuition fees.
  • Award funds may be incorporated into the annual PhD Funding Package for PhD students.
