Dr. Sheryl Spithoff is an Assistant professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto, and a staff physician at Women’s College Hospital.
In this seminar, she will present research findings from her research team’s study examining the privacy-related ethical implications of Canada’s direct-to-patient commercial virtual care industry. Commercial virtual care expanded with the COVID-19 pandemic, providing rapid access to medical services. Through analysis of interview data and privacy policy documents, her research team concluded that commercial virtual care in Canada enables widespread commercial use of health data, permits patient surveillance, and presents risks to privacy and autonomy. These risks may disproportionately affect structurally marginalized groups and communities.
