Watch our most recent event:

At the beginning of the pandemic, Dr. Upton Allen (Division Head of Infectious Diseases, The Hospital for Sick Children) recalls seeing social media posts claiming that Black communities were not affected by COVID-19. Sabina Vohra-Miller (South Asian Health Network co-founder and founder of Unambiguous Science) saw disproportionate COVID-19 rates among South Asian communities. And Joe Cressy (former Chair, Toronto Board of Health) was faced with the daunting task of vaccinating everyone, everywhere.

All three leaders went on to establish intiatives and outreach efforts to improve vaccine confidence, equity and access. They shared the lessons they learned at the CVPD’s recent fireside chat, held on January 22 and moderated by CVPD Director Shelly Bolotin.

“We know now that this one size fits all, top down approach simply doesn’t work,” said Vohra-Miller. “Instead, what we need are very targeted, very nuanced, culturally sensitive, hyperfocused campaigns.”

The discussion touched on specific initiatives that made a big difference, like using community translators instead of translation services, and what needs to change going forward. According to Cressy, “If we use the same ‘reach everyone, everywhere’ approach…we can do anything.”
