Series
5200 (Biostatistics)
Course Instructor(s)
Kevin E Thorpe, Charles (Charlie) D.G. Keown-Stoneman

Course Description

  • The goal of this course is to continue development and application of skills in statistical analysis required in epidemiologic and health care research.
  • Grades for this course will be based on weekly quizzes (20%) three major assignments in the following topic areas:  multiple linear regression (20%), logistic regression (20%), survival analysis (20%), and a final exam (20%). Tutorials are an opportunity for students to ask questions and gain clarification on lecture and problem set materials.  Lab time will be used to provide students with the opportunity to gain practical experience implementing methods.

Course Objectives

  • Analysis where outcome is continuous and exposure and covariates are a mix of continuous and categorical variables (multiple linear regression)
  • Relaxing linearity assumptions of continuous exposure variables through the use of regression splines
  • Perform internal validation by means of bootstrapping or cross-validation
  • Extension to binary outcomes (multiple logistic regression)
  • Extension to time to event and censored outcomes (survival analysis)
  • Dealing with missing data
  • Introduce Bayesian methods
