HIV Stigma, Discrimination and Wellbeing: past to present, finding purpose and meaning
presented by Devan Nambiar

HIV diagnosis, stigma, and discrimination are global issues impacting individuals’ intersectional identities and well-being. We explore the narrative of queer history, sexual behaviors, criminalization of queer identities and HIV status, and impact on wellbeing of marginalized individuals as it intersects with internalized, enacted, and anticipated stigma of HIV diagnosis. The presentation explores the history of HIV activism, ARV treatment, AIDS death, suffering, loss, resiliency, and public disclosure by PLHIV.

We review research on HIV stigma and coping skills of PLHIV and self-care. In addition, Devan speaks from his 34 years of lived experience as a gay/queer South Asian HIV-positive person. The presentation will use various videos to narrate the history and bring to life the voices of PLHIV across the globe.
