Olga Bougie MD, MPH, FRCSC

Research Interests

As Head of Research in Endometriosis and Chronic Pelvic Pain at Mount Sinai Health System, Dr. Bougie leads a comprehensive and multidisciplinary research program aimed at transforming the understanding and management of these complex conditions. Her work integrates population-based epidemiology, clinical research, and health services evaluation to address critical gaps in diagnosis, treatment, and long-term outcomes. She has developed and leveraged large administrative health databases to study the lifetime trajectory of individuals with endometriosis, including patterns of care, surgical outcomes, and the risk of associated comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease and mental health disorders. In parallel, her research explores disparities in access to care and the impact of social and demographic factors on disease experience. Dr. Bougie is also advancing work in surgical quality and innovation, including studies on surgeon ergonomics and factors influencing operative outcomes. Through national and international collaborations, her program aims to generate high-quality evidence that informs clinical guidelines, improves care pathways, and ultimately enhances the quality of life for individuals affected by endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain.

Dr. Olga Bougie is a Clinician-Investigator and Associate Professor in the Division of General Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Toronto, based at Mount Sinai Health System. She is a minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon with advanced training through an AAGL-accredited fellowship and holds a Master of Public Health in Clinical Epidemiology from Harvard University. Dr. Bougie’s research program focuses on endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain, leveraging large population-based datasets to better understand disease trajectories, comorbidities, and outcomes. Her work has contributed important insights into the long-term course of endometriosis, including its associations with cardiovascular disease, mental health, and reproductive outcomes. She has authored numerous high-impact publications and national clinical guidelines, and has secured competitive peer-reviewed funding as a principal investigator. In addition to her research, Dr. Bougie is an award-winning educator and mentor, recognized nationally for excellence in teaching and mentorship. She is actively involved in guideline development and professional societies, contributing to advancing gynecologic care and improving patient outcomes across Canada.
