Research Interests
Dr. Lawrence Mbuagbaw’s research focuses on advancing health research methods to improve healthcare, health equity, and population health. His interests include clinical trials, clinical epidemiology, biostatistics, evidence synthesis, implementation science, and digital health (mHealth). He leads research in HIV prevention, treatment, and health services as Chair and Principal Investigator of the Ontario HIV Treatment Network Cohort Study (OCS), Canada’s largest longitudinal HIV cohort. His work emphasizes the development and application of rigorous research methods to inform clinical practice, health policy, and equitable healthcare delivery in Canada and globally.
Dr. Lawrence Mbuagbaw is a clinical epidemiologist, biostatistician, and health research methodologist whose training spans medicine, public health, and advanced research methodology. He earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Yaoundé I (Cameroon), providing the clinical foundation for his research career. He subsequently completed a Master of Public Health (MPH) at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he developed expertise in epidemiology, global health, and health systems. He later obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University, specializing in clinical epidemiology, biostatistics, evidence synthesis, and randomized trial methodology.
His multidisciplinary training supports an internationally recognized research program focused on improving the design, conduct, analysis, and reporting of health research. Dr. Lawrence Mbuagbaw is Professor in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence and Impact at McMaster University and Director of the Research Methodology Centre at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton.
