We are looking for an (1) Indigenous Peer Researcher to join our research team studying the experience of cis and trans two-spirit, gay, bisexual, queer or other men who have sex with men with monkeypox (mpox) in Canada. The position is open to applicants across Canada who are interested in developing research skills and supporting work to advance the health of sexual and gender minorities. For this project, peers include individuals who self-identify as Indigenous who are cis or trans, two-spirit, gay, bi, or queer men (2SGBQM). Experience working within community is considered an asset.

Indigenous RAs will be given two-tiered supervision including technical and process support by the research team including support with data collection, focus group and interview facilitation training, and other academic learning support. RAs will also be given cultural and community support by Indigenous co-applicants, guidance by Indigenous advisory committees, and other facilitation of community connection to ensure a holistic approach to Indigenous data sovereignty and reciprocity.

Mpox (formerly referred to as monkeypox) was declared a public health emergency of international concern in July 2022. During the 2022 outbreak, it mainly affected sexually active 2SGBQM in Canada. This study aims to learn from the experiences of 2SGBQM regarding their health-seeking behaviours and the response to Mpox. Our research team’s mission is to use data from our research study to help manage ongoing pandemics (e.g., HIV, COVID-19, mpox) and inform preparedness for other infectious threats in the future.

The Mpox team led by Principal Investigator Daniel Grace, brings together multidisciplinary researchers, community members, community partners, healthcare providers and decision makers from across Canada who were affected by mpox in their professional and/or personal lives.
