Building Access

Students require a fob to access the Health Sciences Building (HS) and Gage Building (GA) after hours and on weekends. There is a $20 refundable deposit collected at the time of fob pick up and refunded upon its return. Fobs can be picked up from, and returned to, DLSPH Facility Coordinator, Sandra Lang, located in HSB Room 546. Deposits for fobs obtained prior to September 2016 will not be refunded.  Please complete a Building Access form and submit DLSPH Facilities Coordinator by email to facilitiescoordinator.dlsph@utoronto.ca.

Lost or stolen fobs must be immediately reported to Campus Police, located at 21 Sussex Ave, or by telephone at 416 978 2323.

Study Space

Desk Requests and Renewal – PhD Students

PhD students in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Social & Behavioural Health Sciences are eligible to access desk space with a keyed, lockable cabinet. There is a mixture of hoteling and assigned desks that are allocated per term. There is a $20 refundable key deposit. Priority will be given to students who do not have access to other space. See the table below:

HS 569: PhD (Bio, Epi, SBHS) students in the early stage (prior to completing qualifying exam) may request, at the beginning of each academic term, access to HS 569 which has hoteling desk spaces and lockers. Hoteling spaces are spaces to which a student has access for that day, they are not permanently assigned. You can request a locker to store your belongings, and we do encourage students to lock up their belongings should they need to leave the space.

HS 744: PhD Epidemiology and SBHS students who have completed their qualifying exam may request access to HS 744. The workstations in this area are assigned on a term by term basis, based on three specific operational needs:

  1. Students requiring a workstation 4-5 days per week: These are allotted as a permanent work station. Students will have a lockable hutch within their workstation to lock contents.
  2. Students requiring a workstation 2-3 days per week: These allotted as shared space with another student. For the shared workstation(s), each student is assigned a locker within HS 744.
  3. Students requiring access to a desk space occasionally (day by day): These are allotted as hoteling space, which means access to a desk space for the day. Please request a locker located on the 7th floor (see Lockers below).

Other Desk Requests

1. MSc and MPH students:

MSc and MPH students are eligible for unassignable work spaces on a first-come, first-serve basis. Priority will be given to students who do not have access to other space. See table below:

2. PhD and MPH Occupational & Environmental Health students:

PhD and MPH Occupational & Environmental Health students are eligible for workspace in the Gage Building at 223 College Street as outlined below:

Room Description
GA 110 Shared lounge/study space for all OEH students

GA 110: Students accessing this area will have access to a student lounge/study room with unreserved seating.

Student Space in HS Building

Meeting Rooms

Small meetings rooms in the Health Sciences (HS) building are available for GDPHS students. These rooms are used for small groups, PHS clubs and other program-related meetings. Request for these rooms can be booked through your Divisional Administrative support with at least 24 hours advance notice. Keys for these rooms can be picked up from, and returned to, the Graduate Office, room 620, during regular hours of operation.

Meditation/Prayer Space

Room HS 786 is available to DLSPH and Nursing students for quiet meditation, prayer and other spiritual practices. This room holds 2-3 people. A few yoga mats have been supplied, as well as a small storage cabinet should individuals wish to bring their own.

Parent & Baby Room (Breastfeeding area)

Located on the 1st Floor, the Women’s washroom (room 183) includes a recliner, change table, and diaper bin. Changing tables can also be found in both male and female washrooms on the 6th floor.

Student Space on Campus

Student Commons at 230 College Street: Students will have access to study and lounge space and free bookable meeting and event space for student clubs.

Multi-Faith Centre at 569 Spadina Avenue: Five rooms of varying sizes are available for prayer, worship and other spiritual practices, as well as educational events including meetings, conferences, panel discussions and forums. Student groups may book space free of charge.

Lockers

Early in September, students may sign up for lockers (located on the 7th floor). Each locker is to be shared by 2 students. Lockers are assigned for a 1-year term and must be cleaned out by April 30th  each year. Locker sign-up information will be emailed to students in September.

Student Kitchen/Lounge

There is a kitchen for GDPHS graduate students located on the 5th floor in room HS 549. The room provides the use of a microwave, refrigerator, and eating space.  We ask that students take the time to clean the kitchen area after use and clean out the fridge on Friday afternoons.
